Event Description

Using Comprehensive Evidence-Based Instruction to Develop Proficient and Confident Readers

Hosted by NewEdulight

Please join us for a complimentary three-part virtual series dedicated to exploring the research-based elements of reading development. Learn about the continuum of stages as students begin to make connections between the spoken and written word and the many nuances of the English language. We will start the journey by learning about the science of reading—what it is and what it's not—and find out how we can apply the science in our classrooms. The journey will conclude with an immersive and engaging lesson experience in which we will examine effective instructional practices and look at the essential components for promoting the development of confident and independent learners.

Schedule of Sessions

Session 1: Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at 4:30 pm Central Time
Where the Science of Learning Meets the Science of Reading: Unpacking the Evidence
While the science of reading tells us what is essential for building a reader, the science of learning tells us the conditions that are necessary for learning to thrive and last. Participants will engage in learning about the evidence base for the science of learning and connecting those principles to the components of the Reading Rope. Professional readings and discussions will ground the session, and lesson and video analysis will help connect the research to practice. We will also learn more about how combining the science of learning with the science of reading has the potential to meet the needs of the whole child and support the development of independent learners.

Session 2: Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at 4:30 pm Central Time
Exploring Common Misconceptions About the Science of Reading

Explore what we know about the science of reading, what common misconceptions about it occur (especially in comprehension, vocabulary, and text choice), and how we can work together to enact the science in our classrooms.

Session 3: Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at 4:30 pm Central Time
The Science of Reading in Practice

What is most essential for achieving success for all readers? This session focuses on unpacking research-based strategies for developing the foundational skills that students need to become proficient and independent readers. Participants will receive a lesson experience and explore instructional activities for comprehension instruction that address both word recognition and language comprehension.
