Event Description

How to Engage Your K–5 Readers During Small-Group Instruction:
Intentional Instructional Strategies to Maximize Student Ownership and Engagement

This webinar is for K–5 educators and literacy leaders who are supporting, organizing, or leading core reading instruction—and looking for fresh ideas and tools to make it even stronger.

This topic of this webinar is inspired by the new book Small Groups for Big Readers: Ten Questions Answered About Core Reading Instruction in the K–5 Classroom. In it, authors Taylar Wenzel, Analexis Kennedy, Dena Slanda, and Melissa Carli discuss the key elements of small-group reading instruction and offer strategies for strengthening Tier 1 core instruction. They highlight effective, research-based approaches to support and engage all students in becoming skilled, confident readers.

We’ll explore three big questions from Chapter 6:

  • What evidence-based practices and facilitation strategies can help us provide consistent, high-quality instruction for diverse learners?
  • How can we make sure students are doing meaningful work during small-group lessons?
  • What is the educator’s role as a facilitator?

During our time together, you’ll receive expert guidance and practical strategies for:

  • Applying evidence-based routines that promote equitable, accessible literacy instruction
  • Structuring small-group instruction that will support you as you engage your students with the instructional literacy opportunities that they deserve
  • Creating the high-quality instructional practices and conditions that foster the development of skilled, expressive, curious, reflective, analytical, and independent readers
  • Establishing clear goals and guidelines for small-group lessons

Plus, you’ll get access to free videos, sample lessons, and planning and reflection tools you can use and adapt in your own classroom or school!
