Event Description

Making Social and Academic Development Foundational: Strategies for Leaders

Supporting the full development of students, both socially and academically, remains the fundamental goal of schools and districts. Leadership is essential to achieving this for all students.

In this practical webinar, we will share the groundbreaking work of the Corvallis School District in Oregon and discuss their ongoing efforts to try to meet the needs of their students in full.

Join Corvallis Superintendent Dr. Ryan Noss, Oregon’s 2024-2025 Superintendent of the Year, and Dr. Sheldon Berman, former superintendent and author of many books, including Implementing Social-Emotional Learning: Insights from School Districts’ Successes and Setbacks, to discuss why this work is so important and what districts can do to support students and teachers in it.

Collaborative Classroom's Vice President of Organizational Learning, Peter Brunn, will moderate the discussion.

Intended Audience: Administrators

Dr. Ryan Noss & Dr. Sheldon Berman

Dr. Ryan Noss became superintendent of the Corvallis School District in 2016. Prior to his appointment, he served as the district’s Director of Teaching and Learning. Superintendent Noss has spent over 20 years serving in public education. During that time, he has been a teacher, principal, and director of curriculum and student services.

Under Superintendent Noss’ leadership, the district has achieved the following:
• High school graduation rates have reached an all-time high of 90%.
• The district continues to progress in closing the opportunity gap through a focus on decisions rooted in equity.
• The district has received Corvallis community support through passage of a $200M facilities bond in 2018, resulting in two new schools being built, and improvements to twelve other schools.
• The addition of a mental health program in 2019, which has permitted the district to better address the social-emotional needs of students, and thus improve academic outcomes.

Dr. Sheldon H. Berman is AASA’s Lead Superintendent for Social-Emotional Learning, having implemented highly successful and systemic SEL programs in each of the four districts for which he served as superintendent over 28 years. The author of numerous articles and books on SEL topics—including Children’s Social Consciousness and the Development of Social Responsibility and Promising Practices in Teaching Social Responsibility—he was a member of the Council of Distinguished Educators of the National Commission on Social, Emotional and Academic Development and was the primary author of the Commission’s SEL practice report.
