Event Description

Systematic and Explicit Teaching of the Foundational Skills Standards: Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words

Hosted by Collaborative Classroom & The Reading League South Carolina 


This professional learning experience focuses on the urgent need for high-quality foundational skills instruction. During this one-day, in-person event, participants will have the opportunity to hear from a national literacy leader, will learn how systematic decoding instruction and coordinated lesson structure accelerate student mastery, and will explore the consistent instructional routines that allow students to focus their attention on decoding to develop accuracy and automaticity.

Keynote Speaker: Patrick Riccards




Patrick Riccards is the chief executive officer of the Driving Force Institute for Public Engagement, a national effort transforming the teaching and learning of American history and civics through provocative, relevant video content for students and related professional development for teachers. DFI is committed to inspiring today’s learners need to “think like historians.”

Building off his work as chief of staff to the National Reading Panel, executive director of the Pennsylvania STEM Initiative, and as an advisor to a wide range of education organizations including the American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education, International Society for Technology in Education, Learning First Alliance, Learning Forward, National Governors Association, and the U.S. Department of Education, he also currently serves as the executive director of Best in the World Teachers, leading a collection of research panels and pilot efforts to improve undergraduate teacher education.

 


Meet the Facilitators


Facilitated by Katharine Bonasera, Keri Bartholomew, Melanie Hooper, and Audrey Goninan



Katharine Bonasera is Manager of Educational Partnerships for Collaborative Classroom. She has over 14 years of teaching and leadership experience in urban school environments, serving as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, and principal. In addition to her school-based experience, she has coached early-career Teach For America teachers and serves as an advisor with Relay Graduate School of Education's National Principal Academy Fellowship. She is passionate about cultivating school environments that foster connection, equitable practices, and the opportunity for all community members to thrive. 

Keri Bartholomew has been a lead educational consultant with Collaborative Classroom since 2009. She holds an MA in Teaching Early Childhood  Education with a focus on Language and Literacy from National Louis University, Chicago, Illinois. With over 20 years of experience in public education, Keri has facilitated professional learning with preservice and inservice educators in the areas of reading and writing development, intervention, and social-emotional learning. She has presented at local, state, and national conferences and worked with schools across the country as an independent literacy consultant. She has also served as an adjunct instructor teaching literacy courses at Columbia College in Chicago, Illinois.

Melanie Hooper is a 24 year educator and literacy specialist. Her career has taken her across the United States and abroad providing her diverse experiences in many different schools and districts. Melanie is the founding President of The Reading League South Carolina and she currently serves as a Literacy Specialist with the South Carolina Department of Education. In her teaching role she was recognized for her achievement with students in a Title 1 school and asked to share her work at the International Literacy Association conference at the beginning of her career. Later as a reading coach she was recognized for her coaching innovations in the 13th largest school district in the United States. After 21 years of teaching and learning she recently learned there is a whole body of research about reading that is scientifically evidenced. Ignited with new passion, she wants to begin again because her heart knows that all students can learn to read and all teachers can learn how to teach them. They just need equal access!

Audrey Goninan, M.Ed., is a Literacy Specialist with the Office of Early Learning and Literacy for the South Carolina Department of Education. In this role she provides support to schools and districts in the Palmetto Literacy Project, specifically focusing on building teacher capacity in evidence-based practices. She also supports the implementation of MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) throughout South Carolina by facilitating professional learning and developing resources for district leaders. Audrey is also a LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) facilitator for South Carolina and a founding member and secretary for the South Carolina chapter of The Reading League. Audrey works as an independent contractor with educational companies to review and write curricular materials and utilizes her training with The Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE) to tutor students in grades K-8. Audrey has presented at local and national conferences and is passionate about ensuring all students in South Carolina receive instruction that leads to productive and literate lives.
