Where Literacy Begins: Unifying Oral Language, DLD, and the Science of Reading
11/5/2026
4:00 PM - 4:45 PM Eastern
LIVE WEBINAR (1:00 PM PT / 3:00 PM CT)

Join us for an insightful conversation with world-renowned researcher Dr. Tiffany Hogan, led by literacy expert Linda Diamond, as we explore the fundamental—and often overlooked—role of oral language in literacy development.

While many educators are increasingly embracing the science of reading, Dr. Hogan argues that the "next frontier" is the full integration of language and decoding to support both sides of the Simple View of Reading.

In this conversation, we will explore:

  • The Power of Oral Language: How language development in the womb and from birth sets the foundation for literacy years before a child enters kindergarten.

  • The Science of Implementation: How Dr. Hogan uses implementation science to ensure that evidence-based research genuinely reaches the educators and families who need it most.

  • Practical Classroom Shifts: Why interactive read-alouds should be treated as core instruction rather than a break, and how "noisy" classrooms rich in peer-to-peer interaction can accelerate literacy for all learners.

  • Bridging Research and Advocacy: Insights from Dr. Hogan’s work with DLD and Me and the SeeHearSpeak podcast on communicating complex research beyond academia to empower practitioners and families.

Drawing on over 20 years of research and her background as a speech-language pathologist, Dr. Hogan will take us through her journey from clinical practice to leading the SAiL Literacy Lab and The Center for Translational Research, Implementation Science, and Dissemination for Equity (cTIDE). We will dive into the "hidden" neurodiversity of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)—a condition affecting roughly 1 in 10 children—and discuss why identifying these language-based differences early is critical for future reading success.

Whether you are a school leader, professor, or practitioner, this webinar will challenge you to see literacy through a richer lens. Discover how to honor neurodiversity without lowering expectations, ensuring that every student has the power to learn, connect, and thrive.
