Event Description

How do we honor and meet the unique challenges of older readers?

Please join us for a virtual session with Linda Diamond and special guest panelists where we will explore best practices for engagement and age-appropriate instructional approaches designed to meet the needs of older readers who still need foundational skills instruction. Learn about the critical elements and special considerations that are most effective for building confidence and accelerating reading growth. You will leave with actionable next steps and resources for supporting these shifts in instruction.

Linda Diamond is the co-founder and former president of CORE® (Consortium on Reaching Excellence in Education), a professional learning organization that serves schools, districts, and state agencies in improving literacy and math achievement for all students. Ms. Diamond is the co-author of three widely used professional books for educators: Teaching Reading Sourcebook, Assessing Reading: Multiple Measures, and Vocabulary Handbook. Before her work at CORE, she served as a K–12 district administrator, a middle and elementary school principal, a high school teacher, and a senior policy analyst in an education think tank. She is now spending part of her retirement overseeing the National Council on Teacher Quality’s revision and implementation of the Reading Foundations standard portion of the Teacher Prep Review.

Valerie Michaels is an Instructional Coach for the Newark Central School District in Newark, NY and is a SIPPS Professional Learning Consultant for Collaborative Classroom.  She has worked in education since 1993 at all levels, pre-K through High School.  Her experience includes: Classroom Teacher, Reading Specialist, Reading Recovery Teacher, Instructional Coach and AIS Data Coordinator.  She holds a M.Ed in Literacy from Clarion University of PA and a B.S. in Elementary Education from The State University of NY at Geneseo. She is also a National Board-Certified Teacher. Valerie is very passionate about SIPPS implementation in all grade levels and how it supports the MTSS framework.

Kristy Rauch is a Manager of Educational Partnerships with Collaborative Classroom. She has worked for twenty years in the field of education, as a high school teacher, curriculum developer, facilitator of professional learning, and Social and Emotional Learning consultant to schools and districts. Kristy received her BA in English from Northwestern, and an MA in Educational Policy and Evaluation from Stanford.

Vivett Dukes is a Manager of Educational Partnerships with Collaborative Classroom. She is a proud native New Yorker who has been educated from K–16 in public and private learning institutions across Long Island and New York City. She is a New York State certified ELA teacher (7th–12th), Literacy Specialist (Birth–12th), and Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (Birth–12th).  Since 2002, she has served in classrooms in some capacity, with students in grades Pre-K through graduate school. Currently she serves as an adjunct lecturer to pre-service teachers in the English/Education Leadership Program at S.U.N.Y. at Stony Brook. She is an active member of NCTE, as well as an Executive Board member of NYSEC.
