Exploring Common Misconceptions about the Science of Reading 

 
Explore what we know about the science of reading, what common misconceptions about it occur (especially in comprehension, vocabulary, and text choice), and how we can work together to enact the science in our classrooms.
 

About the Facilitators 
 


Dr. Lenora Forsythe is the Manager of Educational Proposals and Pursuits. She earned her EdD in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Reading from the University of Central Florida. Her research emphasized professional learning for elementary school literacy coaches. She earned her Master’s Degree in Reading Education from Nova Southeastern University, and her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from University of Central Florida. Lenora has ten years of teaching experience at the elementary school level that includes literacy coaching as well as teaching first and third grades. Additionally, Lenora spent five years teaching undergraduate elementary education courses that focus on literacy at UCF.

Andreia Simon is Regional Director for territories in the Mountain West and Western US. Over her 19 years in education, she has been fortunate to serve as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, literacy leader, and instructional coach. Before joining Collaborative Classroom, she served as Senior Literacy Consultant and READ Act Field Support Manager at the Colorado Department of Education. In this role, she led professional learning for educators in the Science of Reading and supported district leadership in implementation of the Colorado READ Act, seminal legislation designed to ensure that all students in Colorado receive equitable access to scientifically and evidence-based reading instruction. Andreia now resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
