Event Description

The Urgent Need to Support Older Readers: Keys to Accelerative Foundational Skills Instruction in the Intermediate, Middle, and High School Grades

Educators and school leaders recognize the urgent need to support intermediate, middle, and high school students who struggle to read. Foundational skills knowledge is at the heart of this work and it is crucial to provide this learning with respectful, dignified, and age-appropriate instruction so that older students enjoy their journey toward becoming successful readers.

In this session, we will examine how the accelerative nature of the SIPPS
® (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words) program provides hope for the work of supporting older students on their reading journey. With Dr. Jennifer McMahon we will examine the reading research related to foundational skills instruction for older students and the ways in which SIPPS can meet students' needs. We will hear from our expert panelists about how they have successfully implemented SIPPS in intermediate, middle, and high schools, and learn from their stories of meeting the urgent need of supporting older students with accelerated foundational skills instruction.
