Being a Reader Small-Group Reading Professional Learning Series Canceled

Join us for a series of seven virtual sessions about Being a Reader Small-Group Reading Sets 1–12. These sessions are designed for Being a Reader educators who want to gain a better understanding of the pedagogy, structure, and intentional design of the Small-Group Reading sets. Small-group reading is the key to differentiating instruction!  During these sessions, you’ll have the opportunity to learn how to leverage your program materials to plan for instruction. Each session is 30 minutes, followed by a 15-minute Q&A period. These sessions will be recorded and registrants can access the recordings for up to a year after the event.  

Cost: The first session in the series is complimentary! Subsequent sessions are $20 per person per session. Register for the entire series for just $100 (a $20 discount).

All sessions are from 1:30–2:15 pm PT | 2:30–3:15 pm MT | 3:30–4:15 pm CT | 4:30–5:15 pm ET.

 


Schedule and Session Descriptions


Session 1: The Collaborative Classroom Approach to Teaching Reading | Wednesday, October 12, 2022 (COMPLIMENTARY)
This unique session features voices from Collaborative Classroom’s program development team. We’ll learn about Collaborative Classroom’s approach to teaching reading through the Being a Reader program, which focuses on the whole child by integrating evidence-based instructional practices that support student learning into the instructional design of the program. Prior to the session, read The Collaborative Classroom Approach to Teaching Reading.

Session 2: Leveraging Your Learning Portal Digital Resources | Wednesday, October 19, 2022
We’ll consider how to leverage digital resources to support your Being a Reader Small-Group Reading Sets 1–12  planning and instruction. Prior to this session, please engage in the Getting Started steps located in the Learning Portal: Support for Educators document, including watching the “Power of the Learning Portal: Being a Reader” video and creating your Learning Portal account.

Session 3: Understanding the Instructional Design of Small-Group Reading Sets 1–6 | Wednesday, October 26, 2022
We’ll learn about the instructional design of Small-Group Reading Sets 1–6, which supports the mastery of foundational skills for the purpose of developing independent, fluent readers. We’ll examine the Sets 1–6 scope and sequence to learn how the simple alphabetic and spelling-pattern phases of the phonics continuum are taught in the small-group format.

Session 4: The Importance of the Small-group Reading Sets 1-5 Instructional Cues | Wednesday, November 2, 2022
We’ll discuss the importance of the clear, consistent, and concise instructional cues in Small-Group Reading Sets 1–5 as well as how they impact mastery of foundational skills for the purpose of developing independent, fluent readers.

Session 5: Planning for Instruction for Small-Group Reading Sets 1–5 | Wednesday, November 9, 2022
We'll examine the essentials of planning for instruction in Small-Group Reading Sets 1–5. We’ll learn about the predictable lesson structure that focuses on phonemic awareness, print awareness, phonics/decoding, and high-frequency word recognition and that provides students with practice in connected text matched to the scope and sequence.

Session 6: Instructional Design of Small-Group Reading Sets 6–12 | Wednesday, November 16, 2022
The instructional design of Small-Group Reading Sets 6–12 explicitly teaches reading strategies, with the goal of having the students apply those strategies to their independent reading. We’ll examine the Sets 6–12 scope and sequence to learn how students practice, apply, and expand on a wide array of reading tools.

Session 7: Planning for Instruction for Small-Group Reading Sets 7–12 | Wednesday, November 30, 2022
We'll examine the essentials of planning for instruction in Small-Group Reading Sets 7–12.  We’ll learn about the predictable lesson structure that focuses on providing students the opportunity to practice, apply, and expand on a wide array of reading strategies so that they can apply the strategies to their independent reading.

  • Registration Fee: $20 per session per person. The first session in the series is free!

  • Payment Options: Credit card or e-check (ACH) preferred. Purchase orders also accepted for orders totaling $500 or more. 

  • Registration Deadline: 30 minutes prior to the session start time

  • Refund Policy: No refunds will be issued for these events. Transfers will be accepted up to 24 hours before the session start time. Please email us at events@collaborativeclassroom.org to request a transfer of registration. 

  • Virtual Platform: Zoom Webinar

  • Recordings: These sessions will be recorded and registrants will have access to them for one year after the event. 

  • Attendance Certificates: Certificates of attendance will be provided within 30 business days after the last date in the event series.
