Putting the Evidence-Base Into Practice: Foundational Skills


Join us for a unique series of virtual professional learning opportunities for educators who are considering or currently implementing the SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words) or Being a Reader, Second Edition programs. These specialized sessions are designed to expedite your learning and deliver the critical information you need to implement these programs successfully.

Who Should Attend: District leaders, state and county literacy leaders, and building principals who are looking for ways to accelerate student learning with systematic and explicit foundational skills instruction
 


Session Options


Each session is one hour with the last 30 minutes being optional to teachers for networking.

Session Option 1: Thursday, September 29, 2022, 4:00–5:30 PM ET
Instructional Design: Learn how the SIPPS scope and sequence, combined with its instructional and correction routines, accelerates student learning. (Being a Reader is covered as well.)

Session Option 2: Thursday, October 20, 2022, 4:00–5:30 PM ET
Program Components: Learn how SIPPS teaches phonological awareness, phonics, and sight words with increasing complexity through clear, concise, and consistent instructional routines and student engagement techniques. (Being a Reader as well)

 


About the Facilitators 

Facilitated by Jeremy Hyler, Maria Arnett, and Elizabeth English

             

Jeremy Hyler was a middle school English teacher for almost 22 years. Currently, he is a Manager of Educational Partnerships for Collaborative Classroom. He is also a teacher consultant for the Chippewa River Writing Project. Jeremy co-authored the best-selling book Create, Compose, Connect! Reading, Writing, and Learning with Digital Tools (Routledge/Eye on Education, 2014) with Dr. Troy Hicks, as well as From Texting to Teaching: Grammar Instruction in a Digital Age (2017), and Ask, Explore, Write: An Inquiry-Driven Approach to Science and Literacy Learning. Maria Arnett is a Manager of Educational Partnerships for Collaborative Classroom. She received her MEd from the University of Virginia and has experience as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, and instructional specialist at the district level. Her role in both school and district-level positions was to support curriculum implementation and provide high-quality professional development for teachers and administrators. Maria has experience as a literacy coach and is passionate about building teacher capacity in research-based literacy instruction to ensure equitable access for all students.

Elizabeth English is a Manager of Educational Partnerships for Collaborative Classroom. She has experience as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, and Reading Recovery teacher. In addition, she has held both building-level and central-office leadership positions as a Title I director, early literacy specialist, intervention specialist, and elementary school principal. She has presented at numerous professional conferences and taught graduate courses in literacy for four universities in Virginia. She holds a BS in Elementary Education, an MEd in Reading, and a PhD in Psycholinguistics.
