 Book Study Virtual Series: Shifting the Balance




Shifting the Balance: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Balanced Literacy Classroom by Jan Burkins and Kari Yates 

This book study is comprised of four one-hour informal Zoom sessions. The discussion will focus on K–2 literacy instruction. Each session is from 7:00–8:00 PM ET. Participants will need to purchase their own copy of the book.  

Who Should Attend: Independent school teachers, coaches, and leaders


Book Study Schedule


Session 1: January 17, 2023 7–8 PM ET
Introduction & Shift 1: During this first session participants will get to know one another, share what brought them to the book study, and begin to explore the content. The discussion will focus on the science behind comprehension instruction and shifts that might be needed to best support students in the K–2 literacy classroom. Please read the introductions and Shift 1 before the session.

Session 2: January 24, 2023 7–8 PM ET
Shift 2 & 3: Participants will discuss the science behind phonemic awareness and phonics. They will share their experiences and consider ways to bring the science to life in their classrooms. Please read Shift 2 and 3 before the session.

Session 3: January 31, 2023, 7–8 PM ET
Shift 4 & 5: Participants will explore what the science says about high frequency word instruction and how young children engage with text. Please read Shift 4 and 5 before the session.

Session 4: February 7, 2023 7–8 PM ET
Shift 6 & Conclusion: Participants will explore the types of texts that are most supportive of early reading development. They will reflect on how the book study will impact their instructional practices moving forward. Please read Shift 6 and the conclusion before the session.

These sessions are complimentary and will not be recorded.


Meet the Hosts

Katharine Bonasera
is a Manager of Educational Partnerships with Collaborative Classroom. She has over 14 years of teaching and leadership experience in urban school environments, serving as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, and principal. In addition to her school-based experience, she has coached early career Teach For America teachers and serves as an advisor with Relay Graduate School of Education’s National Principals Academy Fellowship. She is passionate about cultivating school environments that foster connection, equitable practices, and the opportunity for all community members to thrive.

Keri Bartholomew has been a lead educational consultant with Collaborative Classroom since 2009. She holds an M.A.T. in Early Childhood  Education with a focus on Language and Literacy from National Louis University, Chicago, Illinois. With over 20 years of experience in public education, Keri has facilitated professional learning with preservice and inservice educators in the areas of reading and writing development, intervention, and social-emotional learning. She has presented at local, state, and national conferences and worked with schools across the country as an independent literacy consultant. She has also served as an adjunct instructor teaching literacy courses at Columbia College in Chicago, Illinois.
