Session Descriptions

Session 1 Choices:

Launching SIPPS:
In this session, SIPPS facilitators will learn about the science behind SIPPS; understand the design of the SIPPS program; learn about the unique aspects of the SIPPS levels; learn about, practice, and prepare for giving the Placement Assessment; and start to gain an understanding of the lesson structure and instructional routines.

Delving Deeper with SIPPS:
This session is designed for teachers who have started teaching SIPPS and who have ideally participated in a Launching SIPPS session. In this session, teachers will understand the three-pronged approach to assessments and explore the supports for making instructional decisions based on data. Teachers will also consider fluency practice within SIPPS and how to support students’ development as independent readers.

SIPPS Plus Lesson Experience:
In this session, participants will learn about planning considerations for a specific SIPPS Plus level lesson and note the purpose of each section. Participants will view a complete Plus lesson and reflect on instruction using the Elements of Effective Implementation Reflection Tool.

SIPPS for Leaders/Prospective Program Users
This session is designed for secondary school and district leaders. They will leave with an understanding of how the SIPPS program can support the MTSS framework at the secondary level. They will understand the key elements of an effective SIPPS lesson (including instructional routines & correction routines). Furthermore, they will understand the SIPPS Plus Scope & Sequence as well as assessment best practices for placement and ongoing progress monitoring. They will leave with tools for coaching and developing secondary teachers as they implement SIPPS with identified students.

Session 2 Choices:
Understanding the Accelerative Nature of SIPPS:
The purpose of SIPPS instruction is to accelerate mastery of foundational skills across the phonics continuum as efficiently and effectively as possible. This is especially true for older readers. In this session, participants consider the best way to make this achievable for all students. Considerations will include: pacing, prioritizing groups, meaningful independent work, and supporting students’ reading development beyond foundational skills and as they achieve mastery and finish SIPPS.

Creating Successful Secondary Classrooms:
Creating the conditions for success in literacy instruction includes focusing on building relationships, unlearning defense mechanisms, and building competence so students can feel confident. Especially at the secondary level, facilitators of SIPPS need to prioritize relationship building and social development skills such as active self-regulation as a foundation before effective instruction can take place. This session will include best practices for meeting the needs of older students by creating safe classroom environments in which they can learn and grow.

SIPPS Challenge Lesson Experience:
In this session, participants will learn about planning considerations for a specific SIPPS Challenge level lesson and note the purpose of each section. Participants will view a complete Challenge lesson and reflect on instruction using the Elements of Effective Implementation Reflection Tool.
